About Moonshine

What is moonshine? +
Moonshine is an unaged corn whiskey, typically 40–50% ABV. It's made from a fermented grain mash — usually mostly corn — distilled to high proof. The name comes from illicit Prohibition-era production done by the light of the moon to avoid detection. Today, legal craft moonshine is the same spirit made in licensed distilleries with the same traditions, just without the federal agents.
What does moonshine taste like? +
Clean, slightly sweet corn character with warmth from the proof. Think of it as a more flavorful vodka — lighter than whiskey, warmer than vodka, with natural sweetness from the corn mash. The flavor is honest and upfront. That corn sweetness makes it extremely versatile in cocktails — it plays well with citrus, ginger, fruit, and honey in ways vodka simply can't match.
How strong is moonshine? +
Legal craft moonshine typically runs 40–50% ABV (80–100 proof) — roughly the same as vodka or whiskey. It goes down smoothly, which makes it easy to underestimate. Treat it with the same respect you'd give any spirit at that proof. The old stories about "180-proof moonshine" refer to unregulated home distillation, not craft spirits.
Is moonshine legal? +
Yes — legal craft moonshine is produced by licensed distilleries under federal TTB (Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau) regulations. Montucky Moonshine products are sold through a licensed Shopify store and ship to most U.S. states. Home distillation of spirits without a federal distilled spirits permit remains illegal, regardless of intended use.
Is moonshine the same as whiskey? +
Technically, moonshine is an unaged whiskey. The difference is time — whiskey is aged in oak barrels, which gives it color, smoothness, and complex flavor over years. Moonshine skips that step entirely, which is why it's clear and why the raw grain character comes through so clean. Neither is better — they're just different. Moonshine is the younger, more immediate version of the same story.
Can moonshine make you go blind? +
This is a myth rooted in Prohibition-era horror stories about improperly made home spirits containing methanol. Licensed craft distilleries use proper distillation practices that separate methanol (which comes off at a lower boiling point) from the drinking portion of the spirit. Legal moonshine from a licensed distillery is safe. The blindness stories come from unregulated, unlicensed production — not craft spirits.

Cocktails & Mixing

What is the best thing to mix with moonshine? +
The top mixers are: lemonade (the #1 pairing — tartness perfectly cuts the heat), ginger beer (the Montana Mule), apple cider (fall classic, hot or cold), sweet tea, cola, and huckleberry juice if you're lucky enough to be in Montana. The principle is simple: citrus balances proof, sweetener complements corn, and ginger adds spice. Fresh lime or lemon juice is your most powerful tool in any moonshine cocktail.
Is moonshine like vodka? +
Similar in that both are clear, high-proof spirits. But moonshine has more character — that corn sweetness gives it a distinct flavor that vodka lacks by design. Vodka is intentionally neutral; moonshine is intentionally honest. In cocktails, this means moonshine adds something instead of just adding alcohol. Bartenders often describe it as "a more flavorful vodka" — that's close, though moonshine purists might object.
Why does Mountain Dew go so well with moonshine? +
Mountain Dew was literally named after moonshine slang — "mountain dew" was a common term for illicit spirits — and it was originally marketed as a whiskey mixer in Knoxville, Tennessee. The citrus-sweet carbonation complements moonshine's corn sweetness naturally. Add a splash of lime juice and it tastes remarkably like a whiskey sour. The connection isn't accidental: it's exactly what the drink was designed for.
